Anatomy of an ATV: Starter

Systems: Electrical/Engine

Commonly Located: The ATV starter is located on the engine, normally in front of or just behind the cylinder.

Physical Description: The starter is normally a cylindrical shape and connects to the starter solenoid through one heavy gauge wire.

Function: The starter takes electrical power from the starter solenoid and turns it into rotary motion. This motion turns the crankshaft, which starts the engine.

Maintenance Costs: The starter is a common wear item; therefore, it is not recommended to purchase a used starter as a replacement. Unlike most ATV parts, the starter is a good candidate to be rebuilt. For worn out starters, rebuilding is often a more cost effective solution than purchasing a replacement.
